In Tanzania, primary education is free. Secondary school, which is the equivalent to high school in the US, is not free. Students must either pay for their schooling, or have some form of sponsorship. In addition to secondary school not being free, students must also score high in national exams to make it into secondary school. Secondary schools are taught in English, where primary schools are taught in Kiswahili. In addition to these languages, most Tanzanians also know the language of their individual tribes. Thus, most Tanzanian secondary students are fluent in at least three languages.
